Background and Opportunities in Turkish Mining Sector

  • To strengthen the mining sector, Turkey’s new National Energy and Mining Policy is built on three main pillars: 1) Security of Supply, 2) Localisation by domestic and renewable resources, and 3) Predictable market conditions for investors.
  • Turkey has set a strong focus on developing its mining industry and growing as a minerals exporter. This is especially true with Turkish gold production. Going from almost no production in 2000 to becoming a European leader by 2015. Furthermore, the Turkish government is aiming for 15 bn USD in mineral exports by 2023 (out of 500 bn USD exports in total).
  • Due to the development and success in mining in the past, producing mostly pre-processed materials, together with the geological structures in Turkey, production processes have become more and more important, creating a demand to use more advanced methods and technologies to recover minerals. Hence in the future, the successful mines of Turkey will be the ones that showcase efficient, safe and financially sound production processes.
  • Turkey is also increasing its exploration activities by targeting an annual drilling goal of 5 million m2 annually. In the last two years the General Directorate of Mineral and Research has accomplished a total of 2.5 million m2.
